It is worth taking the time to choose a heating method for your detached house. It is not entirely inconsequential how you heat your house, because the heating method affects living comfort, heating costs, and the environment. In addition to more traditional heating methods, such as geothermal, electric, and oil heating, there are also other heating methods that are efficient and environmentally friendly, but that are easily forgotten. Examples of these are solar energy, pellets, and wood – these increasingly popular heating methods are excellent for heating precisely detached houses.
Wood heating in detached houses – a threat or an opportunity?
"Detached houses have always been heated with wood." Wood is a traditional heating method and houses have been heated with it for centuries. Wood heating is a very sustainable and environmentally friendly option, and therefore it remains a very good choice for heating detached houses today. Wood is a renewable, domestic energy source that can be used in detached houses either as the primary heating method or as supplementary heating. A fireplace is a very common supplementary heating method and simultaneously creates ambiance in many homes. Environmentally friendly wood produces only very small amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur emissions when burned (is that so?) and therefore it is an excellent alternative to, for example, oil heating. A high-quality and regularly maintained wood boiler used for heating minimizes particulate emissions to very low levels. In a wood-heated house, one can also use a so-called double boiler, where in addition to wood, one can also burn pellets, wood chips, grain, and sawdust. Economically, it is particularly profitable to heat a detached house with wood if the wood comes from your own land or the local area.
Pellets are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly
Pellets – this small but effective granular byproduct of the sawmill industry is an excellent option for heating detached houses. Pellets, which are compressed from sawdust and wood chips, have a very high calorific value. When burned, they emit only very small amounts of fine particles compared to burning wood or wood chips, for example. Pellets are burned in pellet boilers that are easy to use and function completely automatically – when the boiler cools down, pellets are automatically fed from the hopper to the burner and the house is heated. A pellet heating system consists in practice of a pellet boiler, a burner, and a screw conveyor. In addition, there must be a silo for the pellets, from which the screw conveyor moves the pellets to the burner. Maintenance measures are relatively simple. Sweeping the pellet boiler and removing ash about every two months is enough for basic maintenance. In fully automatic boilers, it is sufficient to carry out maintenance once a year. (what do you say about the maintenance measures, is that correct?) Since pellets are made entirely of wood waste, heating a detached house with pellets is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Pellets are classified as a carbon-neutral fuel, as they release the same amount of carbon dioxide during combustion as the biomass from the wood does during its growth period.
Solar panels on the roof as a heating method for detached houses
Solar energy is a renewable and environmentally friendly heating option that has become popular thanks to technical progress. Solar panels capture solar energy and can be used to produce both electricity and heat. In practice, solar energy is limitless and emission-free, but effective utilization requires a correctly designed solar panel system.
In Finland, solar panels are often used as a secondary heating method in detached houses, because solar energy production is lower during the winter months, which affects heating efficiency. A so-called hybrid heating system is suitable for use with solar panels, where solar energy is combined with another heat source for heating the residence, such as a water-circulating pellet stove, pellet boiler, wood boiler, or wood chip boiler.
So which is the best heating method for detached houses?
Each heating method has its own characteristics, and therefore the choice of heating method for a detached house depends on many different factors, such as budget and your own, individual preferences. When it comes time to choose, it is always good to contact first an expert in the field. They can explain and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of different heating methods from many different points of view. We at Kardonar Bioenergy Solutions are happy to help you choose a suitable heating method!
